Boat Traffic

The current number of whale watching boats combined with private vessel traffic results in too many vessels surrounding a single pod of whales. The degree of impact is hotly debated. The precautionary principle is the ORCa guideline. Whale watch operators are concerned as well. ORCa will be joining others who are working on approaches to finding an equitable solution. Our current position is that there are too many vessels too often in the proximity of orca whales.

In June, 2001 the Washington Whale Watch Operator's Association revised their self-imposed guidelines in an effort to reduce whale watching impacts. Proposed revisions in distance and duration of contact are steps in the right direction. If you go whale watching, be sure to tell the operator that you are more interested in the welfare of whales than getting a photo.

Write a letter to your state representatives about the problem. Ask for hearings on private vessels approaching orca whales.
